Ingresso alla Cupola

Today I woke up at the rather painful hour of 9AM in order to get to St. Peter's before the crowds, only to find that I was out of milk! Che disastro! But I survived that ordeal and got to Vatican City in 15 minutes on the 870 bus, success! When we got to the entrance we chose a line that did not move at all and then we figured out it was because the guards were letting some priests through before the people ahead of us in line. They must be in cahoots with the Pope or something. After €5, 551 steps, an oxygen tank, a slight pause inside the dome, and a small case a vertigo, we were at the top surveying Roma (Roh Mah Mah- yes I've got this song stuck in my head).

And although I did complain about the priest who go to cut the line, at least we beat all these people:

On the way back down we got to wander around the actual roof which was fun. There was even a souvenir shop up there (the Pope is obviously a shrewd businessman) and we saw the backs of the huge saint statues that go all round the top of Bernini's colonnade.

Also, did you know that the directions on Bancomats (ATM) and payphones in Vatican City are all in Latin? Someone dropped the ball after Vatican Council II.
