The Blue Mosque

Across the Hippodrome is the majestic Blue Mosque which has several minarets and a spacious courtyard. Tourists are welcome when it's not closed for prayer. We walked over to the side entrance where they have bags to put your shoes in. We put our scarves over our heads to be respectful and walked in.

The inside is even more majestic than the outside. As the name suggests, it's covered in blue tiles with all sorts of patterns. It has the same low hanging chandeliers as the Hagia Sofia. The only problem was the overwhelming smell. When shoes are taken off in a place with a hot climate this sort of side effect is inevitable, but we plugged our noses and took as many pictures as we could before exiting to the fresh air.

After putting our shoes back on we wandered back to the entrance gates and back to the Hippodrome where there is a giant obelisk left over from hundreds of years ago and a pole entwined and broken, aptly names the Serpent Column.

The Obelisk of Theodosius, erected in 390A.D.
